İmam Mevsılî
El-İhtiyar
Imam Abdullah b. Mahmûd al-Mevsılî (d. 683/1284) is one of the esteemed jurists and teachers trained in the Hanafi school. For many years he taught in Mosul and its surroundings, one of the scholarly centers of his time, trained students, and systematically wrote down many topics taken as the basis in practice within the school.
He is known for his meticulousness in scholarship, his plain conveying of the school's fundamental views, and his practice-oriented approach. His "teaching, explaining and facilitating" style has, for centuries, made his works a fundamental source in madrasas and fiqh institutions.

"El-İhtiyâr" is the annotated commentary Mevsılî wrote on his own more extensive work, "el-Muhtâr". This work:
- explains the school's views with their proofs,
- grounds the rationale of each ruling in logical and juristic foundations,
- aims to make learning easier,
and is among the most important classical fiqh books.
On the rulings of worship concerning women, the book:
- the determination of the states of menstruation (hayz), postnatal bleeding (nifas) and abnormal bleeding (istihada),
- the identification of the periods of purity,
- when prayer, fasting and other acts of worship are to be performed and when they are to be postponed,
- how the states of excuse are to be assessed
treats such topics in clear and plain language, following the methodology of the Hanafi school.
